AAES GUIDELINES 7:
CONCURRENT THYROIDECTOMY
RECOMMENDATION: Patients undergoing parathyroidectomy should have pre-operative evaluation for thyroid pathology due to the high rate of concomitant disease, which may require thyroid resection. In patients with concomitant primary hyperparathyroidism and thyroid disease requiring resection, thyroid resection should be performed at the time of parathyroidectomy.
COMMENT: If a parathyroid operation is planned, it is important to exclude thyroid problems such as nodules or cancer as, if present, they should be treated at the same time.
RECOMMENDATION: The indications for thyroidectomy for concomitant thyroid disease in the setting of parathyroidectomy for pHPT are the same as those for patients with isolated thyroid disease and should follow evidence-based guidelines.
COMMENT: A self evident statement
